Alexandrite

Alexandrite is a rare and highly valuable variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. It is known for its unique color-change phenomenon, shifting from green in daylight to reddish-purple under incandescent light. This mesmerizing effect, known as the alexandrite effect, makes it one of the most sought-after and expensive gemstones.

Color & Appearance:

Primary Color (Daylight): Green, bluish-green, or yellowish-green.
Secondary Color (Incandescent Light): Reddish, purplish, or brownish.
Clarity: Typically transparent to translucent; high-quality stones have excellent clarity with minimal inclusions.
Luster: Vitreous (glass-like shine).
Formation & Origin:

Naturally formed under rare geological conditions, requiring beryllium, chromium, and vanadium.
Major sources include Russia (Ural Mountains, the original discovery site), Brazil, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Madagascar, and India.
Russian alexandrites are considered the finest due to their strong color change and deep hues.
Hardness & Durability:

Mohs Hardness: 8.5 (very durable, suitable for everyday wear).
Toughness: Excellent, resistant to scratches and damage.
Metaphysical & Healing Properties:

Believed to bring balance, prosperity, and creativity.
Enhances intuition, self-confidence, and emotional well-being.
Associated with the heart and third eye chakras, promoting harmony and spiritual growth.
Value & Rarity:

The most valuable alexandrites exhibit a strong, distinct color change and good clarity.
Natural alexandrites are extremely rare, making them one of the most expensive gemstones per carat.
Synthetic and lab-created alexandrites exist but do not hold the same value as natural stones.
Uses:

Popular in high-end jewelry (rings, pendants, earrings).
Used as a birthstone for June (alternative to pearl and moonstone).
A cherished collector’s gemstone due to its rarity and color-changing property.
